Anhinga Drying Wings
The Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) swims with only its long neck above the waterline, which is how it earned the nickname "snakebird." I photographed this one from a boat on the Tortuguero canal, on Costa Rica's roadless northern Caribbean coast. Its wings were spread wide in the classic post-swim drying pose this species is known for. This original photograph is available in a variety of formats, from wall art to gifts.
A windblown crest tops its head. Its eye ring is pale turquoise, set against a deep red iris. The bill shifts from yellow to olive. All of it stands out against a wall of vivid rainforest green, creating a graphic, almost painterly composition. It holds its presence at any size, from a small accent piece to a large wall statement.

The Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) is a waterbird built for tropical wetlands, and the canals of Tortuguero, Costa Rica are exactly where it belongs. I photographed this one from a boat on the way to Aninga Lodge and Spa, wings spread wide in the classic post-swim drying pose against a wall of vivid rainforest green. The wild crest, turquoise eye ring, orange bill, and black-and-silver feathers make it one of the most graphic bird portraits I have taken.

Anhinga Bird Portrait Mouse Pad
That electric blue eye ring only shows up during breeding season, and now it's staring at you from your mouse pad instead of a Costa Rica canal.
The Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga), sometimes called the snakebird for how it swims, is a diving waterbird I photographed along the Tortuguero Canal in Costa Rica, wings still spread wide from drying after a swim. Its bright blue eye ring and shaggy dark crest only appear like this during breeding season.
At 9.25 by 7.75 inches, the bird's head and that unmistakable blue eye stay the clear focal point, with just enough wing and feather texture to keep the scene alive. Smooth polyester and a quarter inch rubber base round out a size built for laptop desks.
