Black-cheeked Woodpecker Calling

This male Black-cheeked Woodpecker (Melanerpes pucherani) clings to a tree trunk with his beak open mid-call. I photographed him in the wild at Sarapiquí, in Costa Rica's Heredia Province, in April 2024. This original photograph is available in a variety of formats, from wall art to gifts.

His bold black face mask, red throat patch, and yellow-olive crown stand sharp against a deep, clean green background. The pale tree trunk runs close beside him, giving the whole frame a graphic, portrait-like quality.

Black-cheeked Woodpecker Photography Note Card

$5.95

The note card to give the birder, the Costa Rica traveler, or the tropical bird collector on your list — an original portrait of a small woodpecker with serious rainforest attitude.

I photographed this Black-cheeked Woodpecker in Sarapiquí, Costa Rica, clinging to the side of a tree with his bill slightly open, that bright eye locked in, and the rainforest behind him turning into a smooth green blur. What I love about the image is the simplicity, no clutter, no chaos, just a beautiful tropical bird doing exactly what woodpeckers do best: working the tree, staying alert, and looking far more serious than his tiny size should legally allow.

Each note card is printed by hand in my Henniker studio on heavyweight Red River Linen cardstock, which gives the rich green of the rainforest and the gold, red, and black detail of the bird a soft textured surface that feels closer to a small art print than to ordinary stationery. The inside is blank for whatever you have to say. Every order arrives flat and pristine with a matching envelope and protective sleeve, ready to send as a greeting card for a birthday, a thank you, an encouragement note, or a thinking-of-you message to anyone who loves real tropical wildlife photography.
