Red-bellied Woodpecker Storing Nuts
The Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is a year-round resident of eastern New Hampshire. This one was busy in my own backyard in Henniker, hammering nuts into crevices in the tree bark. I watched him for an hour. What he didn't know was that our resident squirrels were watching too. They climbed up and stole every single nut. The drama of backyard wildlife never gets old. This original photograph is available in a variety of formats, from wall art to gifts.
A landscape-orientation close-up, the bird pressed against a rough diagonal trunk with soft chartreuse bokeh filling the background. The vivid red crown, boldly barred black-and-white back, and warm buff chest are all sharp and clear. There is something satisfying about a bird this focused on a task. You can almost hear the tapping.

Red-bellied Woodpecker Photography Note Card
The note card to give the backyard birder, the woodpecker fan, or anyone who has lost their lunch to a squirrel — an original photograph taken in my own New Hampshire yard with a story behind it.
I watched this Red-bellied Woodpecker for about an hour in my backyard in Henniker, New Hampshire, hammering nuts into tree bark crevices, carefully wedging each one in like he was building the world's most serious snack vault. What he didn't know was that our resident squirrels were watching too. They climbed up and stole every single nut he had worked so hard to store. Every single one. This bird deserved a union representative.
I print every note card myself in my small Henniker studio, on heavyweight Red River Linen cardstock that holds the bright red of the crown, the crisp barred wings, and the summer green of the backyard exactly as the moment looked. The inside is left blank for your own words. Each one arrives flat and pristine with a matching envelope and protective sleeve, ready to send as a greeting card for a birthday, a thank you, an encouragement note, or a thinking-of-you message to a backyard birder, a woodpecker fan, or anyone who needs a small dose of cheerful wildlife in their mailbox.
