This Black Bear (Ursus americanus) carries a freshly caught salmon in its mouth, water still dripping from its wet fur. I watched this bear for several hours along a stream in Valdez, Alaska in September 2023, as it caught salmon and pressed out the eggs to eat — just the eggs. Dark wet fur fills most of the frame, the silver salmon gripped sideways in the bear's jaws, water droplets caught mid-air. Rocky stream tones blur behind it, keeping all the focus on this close, unscripted moment from the wild.

My original photograph captures a black bear mid-catch on an Alaska river, salmon clamped in its jaws and water still dripping from the fish. This is the raw, unstaged version of wildlife you wait days for and try very hard not to mess up when it finally happens, the bear focused, powerful, and completely locked onto the salmon run.
