Black Bear Catching Salmon

This Black Bear (Ursus americanus) carries a freshly caught salmon in its mouth, water still dripping from its wet fur. I watched this bear for several hours along a stream in Valdez, Alaska in September 2023, as it caught salmon and pressed out the eggs to eat — just the eggs. This original photograph is available in a variety of formats, from wall art to gifts.

Dark wet fur fills most of the frame, the silver salmon gripped sideways in the bear's jaws, water droplets caught mid-air. Rocky stream tones blur behind it, keeping all the focus on this close, unscripted moment from the wild.

Caviar, it's what's for Dinner Wildlife Photography Print

This black bear was as surprised to see me as I was to see him! I watched him for several hours as he snatched salmon from the stream, carried them to the upper bank, and pressed on their bellies to squeeze out the eggs. Just the eggs. It looked like a salmon slaughterhouse.

This Black Bear wildlife photography print is available on archival fine art paper or sublimated aluminum metal, printed in my New Hampshire studio and shipped directly to your door. Every print is made to order from 100% original wildlife photography.

Black Bear Salmon Photography Note Card

$5.95

The right note card for the bear lover, fisherman, or Alaska traveler on your list — an original photograph of the real thing, mid-catch.

My original photograph captures a black bear mid-catch on an Alaska river, salmon clamped in its jaws and water still dripping from the fish. This is the raw, unstaged version of wildlife you wait days for and try very hard not to mess up when it finally happens, the bear focused, powerful, and completely locked onto the salmon run.

The folded note card measures 5 x 7 inches on heavyweight Red River Linen cardstock, with the photograph filling the entire front and the inside left clean for your own words. Archival inks hold the deep blacks of the fur and the silver flash of the salmon, and a matching envelope and protective sleeve come with every order. Hand-finished in our small New Hampshire studio, this is the kind of greeting card a fisherman, an Alaska traveler, or an outdoor friend will actually keep.
