Red-bellied Woodpecker
This Red-bellied Woodpecker was busy gathering and storing nuts. I watched him for an hour while he hammered the nuts into a tree bark crevice. Unfortunately for him, we have a pair of squirrels that know his shenanigans and they climb up the tree and steal his hard work!
Fun Fact!
A Red-bellied Woodpecker can stick out its tongue nearly 2 inches past the end of its beak. The tip is barbed and the bird's spit is sticky, making it easier to snatch prey from deep crevices.
